Our Approach

Since the company’s establishment in 1993 our commitment to personal service, high standards of work, experience as project managers and successful track record has led to our continuing growth and reputation. Our team of highly qualified and experienced consultants includes environmental scientists and engineers, risk assessors and associated geotechnical and computer modelling experts. We work with an extensive network of other advisors and consultants including civil engineers, surveyors, planners, noise consultants and ecologists.

Our Team

Dr Tony Smith (Partner)

Over a professional career of more than 30 years, Tony Smith has become an acknowledged expert in contaminated land assessment and remediation. Following a Doctorate at the University of Liverpool, he carried out contract research for Central Government, including developing and carrying out the first national scale survey of contaminated land sites. He was a founding director of the RPS environmental science consultancy before establishing Smith Grant in 1994. He has worked on vast range of environmental assessment and remediation projects, advising on some of the most problematic sites in the UK.


Katrina Hawkins (Partner)

Katrina has over 20 years professional experience in technical consultancy and business management, dealing with all aspects of the environmental impacts of development and operational activities. With a degree in Chemistry and Masters in Environmental Pollution Control, her career developed at a leading international environmental consultancy, and she ultimately managed the global due diligence team. Katrina joined Smith Grant in 2004, becoming a Partner in 2005, and specialises in air quality and contaminated land consultancy. She has managed projects world-wide for clients including developers, engineers, planners, international corporations, banks, venture capitalists, lawyers and government bodies. Recent projects include air quality and odour assessments of landfill sites, energy from waste plants, waste transfer stations along with extensive residential developments. She is a Chartered Environmentalist, Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and a Member of the Institute of Air Quality Management.


Ben Thomas (Partner)

Ben started his career at Smith Grant in 2002 after gaining a degree in Geology and Masters in Environmental Geochemistry, and became a Partner in 2011. He specialises in the investigation, risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land, using his skills to develop timely, cost effective and pragmatic solutions for clients. He has delivered a wide variety of land regeneration and remediation projects for national housebuilders, along with schools, commercial premises, industrial units and other facilities. He is a popular and effective communicator and enjoys excellent working relationships with many regulators. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management, a Chartered Environmentalist, is registered with CLAiRE as a qualified person to review site Development Materials Management Plans and is a Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC).


Dan Wayland (Partner)

Dan commenced his environmental career in the oil and gas industry following completion of his undergraduate studies in Environmental Forensics and his Masters in Environmental Pollution and Protection. He later joined Smith Grant in 2010 as a Consultant specialising in contaminated land investigation, risk assessment and remediation and became in Partner in 2018. Dan is involved in all aspects of the contaminated land business and has experience on working on a wide variety of brownfield sites including former chemical works, metal mining sites, hospitals and petrol stations. His primary role is the implementation and supervision of intrusive investigations, production of remedial strategies and overseeing the validation of remediation works. Dan is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management and is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager.


Cezary Salwa (Consultant)

Cezary Salwa is an Engineering Geologist with 20 years professional experience in geotechnical consultancy, dealing with all aspects of soil mechanics and site investigation. With first and second degrees in geological sciences, his career has involved a large variety of infrastructure projects in the UK and Europe, including Phase 1 desk studies and Phase 2 site investigations and report writing. He was a University Lecturer in Soil Mechanics for 10 years and has written 3 technical papers on geotechnical matters. Since joining Smith Grant in 2016 Cezary has been involved in a variety of site investigations for housing and commercial developments and in providing recommendations for development strategies.


Scott Miller (Consultant)

Following the completion of his undergraduate degree in Environmental Biogeoscience, Scott begun his career gaining experience in a number of environmental sectors including renewable energy, waste recycling and environmental sustainability. Joining Smith Grant LLP in 2014 as a Consultant specialising in contaminated land investigation, risk assessment and remediation, Scott has gained experience in a wide range of the Partnership’s contaminated land business. This includes working on numerous brownfield sites such as former chemical works, a decommissioned paper mill and an area historically associated with metal processing. His primary role is the implementation of extensive soil, gas and water monitoring and sampling schemes, along with undertaking site walkovers, overseeing intrusive investigations and producing Stage 1 and 2 contaminated land reports. He also carries out gas membranes inspections and topsoil validations across the North West for a number of house builders.


Phillip Magraw (Consultant)

Phil commenced his environmental career in 2015 following the completion of his undergraduate studies in Environmental Science specialising in geochemistry and hydrogeology. He initially gained experience in the contaminated land industry in the undertaking of ground gas investigations and risk assessments across the UK. He joined Smith Grant LLP in early 2017 and is involved in the wide range of contaminated land investigation and assessment projects undertaken by the company. Phil is a fellow of the Geological Society of London (FGS) and a member of the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (SoBRA).


Meg Jones (Graduate Consultant)

After completing a degree in Environmental Science in 2017, Meg went on to do a Master’s in Environmental Pollution at the University of Reading. She then joined the company in late 2018 as a Graduate Consultant. Currently, she is involved in a wide range of contaminated land investigation projects undertaken by the company. She frequently inspects gas membranes and topsoil cover systems for housebuilders in the North West and conducts gas monitoring, soil and water sampling, data handling and report writing for a variety of sites.


Claire Landsborough (Accounts and Office Administrator)

Claire joined the team in January 2017, as the Accounts and Office Administrator, and will typically be your first point of communication when contacting Smith Grant LLP. Since starting her career, over twenty-five years ago, as a junior receptionist, Claire has gained a vast knowledge of office and financial administration in a wide range of industries. Having achieved many qualifications in customer care and administration, Claire understands the importance of maintaining good business relationships with customers and suppliers and will always endeavour to resolve any queries you may have, regarding any aspects of the administration process, efficiently and effectively.


Dewi Lloyd (Associate)

Dewi holds a degree in physics from Imperial College and a Masters in Air Pollution Management and Control from the University of Birmingham, making him ideally qualified as our leading atmospheric pollution modeller. After an early period of working as an environmental consultant at the Univeristy of Liverpool, Dewi followed a varied and highly successful career, including posts as a reactor physicist with Nuclear Electric, consultant with Cap Gemini and systems manager with Unilever Research. Dewi became a Smith Grant Associate in 2001, and carries out air dispersion modelling for pollution assessments including proposed energy from waste plants, roadstone plants, quarries, composting facilities and landfills.
